The World Economic Forum (WEF) estimates that around $5tn of global infrastructure investment is required each year from now until 2020. This is on a business as usual case and only takes limited account of the need to 'green' the world's energy infrastructure. In the UK, estimates for energy investment to upgrade ageing transmission infrastructure and develop greener, more sustainable, and secure generation vary from between ￡150bn and ￡330bn between now and 2030. In reality, it is likely to be at the upper end of this range.
