Judgment day is quickly approaching for Exxon Mobil in Iraq ? and by extension for the rest of the country's foreign operators. With 16 months now passed since Exxon signed its highly controversial agreements to explore six blocks in Iraq's semiautonomous Kurdistan region, the US supermajor is nudging up against work obligations in the region (EIF Nov.16' 11). Perhaps reflecting still-lingering uncertainties, Energy Intelligence was told last month that while Exxon is preparing to start drilling in Kurdistan in the second or third quarter, no single target date is set.
