India curtails mega-coal plant programme

India is scaling back a fagship expansion of coal-fred power capacity, according to a power ministry source. States have said the additions are unnecessary and are experiencing dif- fculties acquiring land. The country will scrap plans for four ultra-mega power projects (UMPPs), with a combined capacity of 16GW, which will dent forecast demand for imported thermal coal.
