Until recently, resource-rich Canada had remained largely unaware and even disinterested in Asia's rising economic and political power. Despite its claim to being a Pacific country, Canada had remained content to rely on exports to the US, the world's largest economy and its immediate neighbour to the south to the extent that Stephen Harper could openly offend China when he became PrimeMinister in 2005.Over the last next few years as Canada became more comfortable with its previously little known new leader, it also had to confront a global landscape that was being radically reshaped by the political and economic emergence of China, India and the rest of Asia.
