THEIMPORTANCE OF SAND

At a recent visit to a parkland golf club we were discussing progress with their thatch control and removal programme. The Greens Chairman and Course Manager were both pleased with improvements over the three seasons we had been working on the greens,in particular their improved firmness. For the first time the club was in a position to keep the greens in use during and following wet weather and they had been in play all winter for the first time ever (barring frost). The programme initially met with some resistance from the members, particularly the regular sand top dressings. However as the greens began to improve and we relayed this information back to the members, there was increasing acceptance of the works.
