The first time I went to France on golfing business I initially became quite confused. My visit was to the annual exposition of AGREF, the French greenkeepers' association. Yet the man who greeted me there was the Vice-President of the French Golf Federation. I thought I'd ventured into the wrong place - until it gradually dawned on me that the greenkeepers and administrators shared a remarkable relationship. On many key golfing issues they spoke as one. That relationship has grown even stronger over the years and now they stand together in negotiating, with their national government, policies which are aimed at reducing the use of pesticides and water on every course in the land.
