A formal safety management system serves as a last line of defence against workplace injury in two ways. The first of these relates to the increased ability of an organisation to protect its employees from harm through more structured policies, procedures, risk assessments and hazard and risk mitigation. The second relates to the ability of an organisation to demonstrate that it has complied with its legal obligation (possibly - it is not guaranteed) to provide a safe workplace, and to supply safe systems of work.
