Two field experiments were carried out during the two seasons of 1994 and 1995 to investigate the effect of adding sulphur (0, 200 and 400 kg/fed) and NPK (60:0:45, 90:30:67 and 120:60:90) on the productivity of eggplant. The obtained data could be summarized as follows: 1. Addition of sulphur as soil dressing caused a significant increase in plant height, no significant increase in number of leaves/plant, dry weight of whole plant, leaves and branches. With increasing the level of sulphur addition, the phosphorus and potassium percentages in leaf tissues were increased, while nitrogen percentage decreased. The total fruit yield recorded an increase when sulphur was added at 200 kg/fed compared to the control treatments. This increase amounted to 18.4%. The obtained data also reveal that, no significant difference regarding their effects on the total yield of eggplant was detected between additions of 200 kg and 400 kg sulphur per feddan. 2. Addition of NPK as a compound fertilizer to eggplant at medium rate of (90:30:67) or higher rate (120:60:90) were superior in all elements of growth characteristics compared with the addition of low rate (60:0:45). Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contents in leaves followed the same patterns of changes as that mentioned before. Total fruit yield of eggplant tended to increase with increasing the addition rate of NPK mixture, whereas with high rate resulted in no significant differences in yield compared to plants supplied with the medium rate (90:30:67 NPK). 3. All interaction treatments (sulphur and NPK) had no significant effect on growth characters and yield of eggplant.
