Workshop organized by German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) for the Integrated Control of the Baluchistan Melon Fly in Central Asia

The Baluchistan or Russian melon fly, Myiopardalis par-dalina (Diptera: Tephritidae) is an important pest of melon crops in Turkey, Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and north India. It appears to have invaded Central Asia (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan) within the last 10 years. The original range of the fly was the Middle East, Caucasus and Western Asia where it has been known for at least 100 years. As a result of the spread of the pest, melon production has been dramatically reduced in those countries where it has recently become established mainly as a result of the farmers having little or no understanding, or indeed knowledge, of the pest and very little capacity to control the fly.
