This experiment was carried out for two successive seasons (2007 and 2008) to study the possibility of inducing some variations in vegetative growth and flowering of Lathyrus odoratus. Dry seeds were subjected to gamma irradiation at 0.0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 Krad while some treatments (8, 16 and 32 Krad) were soaked for 4 h in GA3 at 1000 ppm. Results showed that, gamma rays induced some variations in germination, vegetative growth, flowering, pigments and total protein band contents. Treating seeds with gamma rays at 1 and 8 Krad plus 1000 ppm GA3 increased germination percentage significantly. Gamma rays at 4 Krad increased plant height, number of branch, fresh and dry weights of roots significantly. Using 8 Krad increased stem diameter, leaf number and area, fresh and dry weights of vegetative growth significantly in both seasons. Treating seeds with 0 (control) or 1000 ppm GA3 led to early flowering date, while the number of flowers significantly increased with 16 Krad. The treatment with 4 Krad significantly increased fresh and dry weights of horns and dry weight of seeds. Using 4 or 8 Krad significantly increased flower age on plant. Treating seeds with 2 Krad significantly increased chlorophyll a and b, while cartenoids increased with 4 Krad. Treating seeds with 1 and 4 Krad of gamma rays or 1000 ppm of GA3 significantly reduced protein bands from 17 (control) to 11 bands. Finally soaking seeds in GA3 plus treating with gamma rays had no effect on growth and flowering, while gamma rays at 4 and 8 Krad enhanced most parameters of Lathyrus odoratus.
