Water Model Study of the Spout and Eye Formation in a Gas-Stirred Ladle

The present study is an experimental Investigation on the spout and eye regions of the bubble plume with a video technique. It was found that spout heights increase with the bottom gas flow rate, and decrease with the bath height. Correlations are developed for the spout height and spout spread in terms of the operating variables. With an oil layer on the top, spout heights appear to be somewhat lower than those without the oil on top. With oil on top, the eye size is found to depend on the heights of both the liquid phases as well as gas flow rate. However, for relatively thick oil layers on top, the eye size was obtained to be practically independent of the height of the lower phase. Further work is needed to quantitatively characterize the eye formation with thick top layers.
