Effects of laboratory controlled CO gas exposure to predominately carbon and graphite articles containing small to significant levels of iron at temperatures between 500 ℃ and 900 ℃ and using various combinations of CO (95-100 Volume %). H_2 (0-5 Volume %) and SO_2 (0-2 Volume %) were measured. Interactions with the environment (gas composition) and impurities within the articles (catalysts or poisons) were analyzed. Because of these chemical, physical and thermal interactions, no absolute statements can be made in advance about the ability of the various carbon and graphite materials to resist CO attack, but in general, higher iron and hydrogen levels tend to favor CO breakdown and carbon deposition while the presence of sulfur inhibits this reaction.
