The environmental management in the citrus packing industry of Valencia

There is currently an increasing demand for natural products in agricultural markets, tree of chemical treatments and produced following environmentally sound management techniques. In fact, the quality preserving systems (ISO 9000) and the environmental quality concerns known as Environmental Administration Systems are being broadly applied. They are useful for both consumers and industry, because they provide valuable information for the former and they allow the development of environmentally adequate industrial procedures. The present work has evaluated the environmental practices conducted by the citrus packing industry of Valencia, Spain. Among them: residual water processing, waste management, atmospheric emissions, etc. The study has evidenced the low implementation of the above mentioned management systems, the unaccomplishment of the environmental legislation and the ignorance of the direct consequences of a bad environmental management on both the environment itself and on the enterprise involved.
