Most bowlers don't appreciate that the end of the playing season is when the significant work starts for the greenkeeper. As the players go indoors for the winter, the greenkeepers start rolling their sleeves up. Most bowlers have the clever knack ofavoiding the hard work that makes the enjoyment possible. At the end of the playing season we think about restoring and renovating the surface in good time before the onset of winter dormancy. During the winter we focus on maintaining turf health, aerating the soil and preventing any undue deterioration or invasions. Greenkeepers who are busy during the autumn and winter tend to produce good summer greens without too much bother. Those who lock the gate behind them in October usually find the whole business a struggle. The closed season is the crucial time.
