Campaigners have condemned plans by Italy's Eni to develop Africa's first tar sands project in the Congo Basin, saying it poses huge risks for one of the world's poorest countries and will worsen runaway climate change. Coinciding with the G8 summit in Italy, civil society groups meeting in Sardinia called for Eni to rethink agreements it signed in 2008 to spend $3 billion developing tar sands, palm oil for fuel and food, and electricity in Congo (Brazzaville).
