Horizon Nuclear Power, the partnership set up by Germany's E.On and RWE to develop new nuclear power stations in the UK, said Tuesday it has chosen Wylfa in North Wales as the prime site to build its first nuclear plant. It hopes to submit a planning application in 2012 and could have the plant operational by 2020. But Horizon added that the timetable is subject to getting the "right market conditions," which it said do not now exist in the UK. Horizon did not elaborate, but backers of nuclear power in the UK, including EDF Energy Chief Executive Vincent de Rivaz, have called for a floor under the carbon price or some other form of public subsidy to make the economics of nuclear newbuild more competitive.
