New Flare-up on Saudi Border

Yemen's Al-Houthi rebels accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out a new barrage of air strikes and rounds of shelling targeting Yemen's northern Saada province on Sunday, following the announcement that three more Saudi soldiers were killed in renewed fighting (IOD Nov.10,p4). The Al-Houthis, a group of well-armed militants in Yemen's northern mountains, said on their website Monday that Riyadh launched more than 35 air strikes on villages near the city of Saada. Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat on Sunday quoted sources in Saada as saying the Al-Houthis unsuccessfully tried to seize Yemen's port of Maydi, on the Red Sea coast very close to the Saudi border. The Saudi navy blockaded the waters around Saada earlier this month to try to prevent weapons from reaching the rebels.
