Suncor Energy and Petro-Canada have asked the Canadian government to repeal a law that protected Petro-Canada from any unwanted takeovers by restricting the stake that a single investor could hold in the company. In a filing made with regulators in conjunction with their proposed C$18.4 billion (US$15 billion) merger, the two companies asked the government to overturn the 1991 Petro-Canada Public Participation Act set up when the former state-owned entity was privatized.
