UN panel recommends new women's agency.

Nurses worldwide have influenced the recommendations of the Panel charged by United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Kofi Annan to identify how gender equality can be more fully addressed in the work of the UN.As the December issue of the International Nursing Review went to press, early indications from knowledgeable sources made it seem likely that the UN Coherence Panel would recommend that the UN General Assembly create a new women's fund or programme. The new programme would be independent, governed by its own board, and have its own mandate and operational capacity at field level. Sources also indicated that the Panel would probably recommend funding of USdollar200 million for the first year, and that the programme be headed by an Under Secretary General, which is two levels higher than the head of the existing women's fund, UNIFEM.
