There is much progress and much excitement in the world of nursing terminologies and classification and it is exemplified in this issue of the Journal. First, there is the issue of nurses becoming involved in electronic records systems. It has become clear that nurses' input and control of these systems are essential if the systems are going to reflect what it is that nurses do. Some countries are moving ahead with electronic record systems that will be used throughout their healthcare facilities. The critical issue is that someone else will determine the structure of the nursing record if nurses do not do so themselves. The article by Hughes, Lloyd, and Clark in this issue demonstrates insight and foresight into this situation and traces the conception and development of a conceptual model for the electronic record for nursing in the United Kingdom. It also appears to be a call to action to nurses in all parts of the globe as the situation in the United Kingdom provides an exemplar of what is sweepingthrough many healthcare systems throughout the world. Nursing input and control are essential in all countries whether the health system is totally government operated or operated as a mixed private and governmental system.
