It has always been thought that management of broiler flocks was simple -the birds had to grow up and to increase their daily feed intake to ensure a certain body weight at a given age. However, broilers become more and more a source of protein, rather than just a carcase, with an increased average body weight to get processed meat. Selection has improved growing performance, but at the expense of bird sensitivity. Pathology becomes more important (parasitism, bacteria, viruses, physiological failures) and leads to outbreaks and losses.
