polymers thus form an interesting group of compounds whose structure can be designed to reflect the bonding and structural characteristics of silicon and impart different functions from those of carbon-based polymers. For example, the author and co-workers have developed a range of materials exploiting the characteristics of the siloxane bond, including contact lens materials, liquid crystal materials, surface modifiers, polarographic materials, and heat-resisting insulating interlayer films. Despite the essential importance of the fact that the polymers contain silicon, control of the polymer primary structure dictating physicochemical properties has been far from satisfactory.
