Commentary: Medical Research in China: Where Does It Go?

China is now the world's second largest economy. With coffers flush from economic expansion, the Chinese government is providing more financial support for basic research. Much of the money has been disbursed through the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and other such outlets. Financial support for medical research comes from government agencies as well as nongovernmental organizations, universities, and hospitals. However, the majority is from government, especially the national government. The Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the government agency at the national level, is responsible for funding major scientific research projects in the country.
