Welcome to this special issue of the International Journal of Semantic Computing. This special issue consists of six best papers selected from the Eighth IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing (ICSC 2014), held in Newport Beach, CA, USA on June 16-18, 2014. Semantic Computing research addresses the research and practice of computing based on semantics including meaning, context, and intention. The ICSC conference is an international forum for researchers and practitioners to present research that advances the state of the art and practice of Semantic Computing. It also serves as a forum for identifying emerging research topics and defining the future of the field. The authors of these selected papers were asked to extend and revise their original ICSC 2014 papers, and each extended article was reviewed by the referees.
