It was with great anticipation that over 300 professionals working in children's palliative care (CPC) across Europe and beyond met together from 28 to 30 November 2012 for the first European Congress on Paediatric Palliative Care. The number of conference participants was double what the organisers had expected and there were still many who had to be turned away-a testament to the need for knowledge about CPC. Held in the magnificent surroundings of the Acquario Romana, the congress attracted participants with a wide range of professional backgrounds and experience. With 125 papers given as oral or poster presentations, the scope of the conference was broad. Topics represented included personal and family experiences of CPC, eligibility for CPC services, prognosis, family and staff support, and research. Papers also covered the full spectrum of ages, from neonates and young children to adolescents and the challenges of transitioning young people from child to adult services.
