Development of Early Mutants with Resistance to Ascochyta Blight or Leaf Miner

The ICRISAT/ICARDA Joint Kabuli Chickpea Project in Syria has developed lines with resistance to six ascochyta blight (caused by Ascochyta rabiei) races identified by Reddy and Kabbabeh (1985). None of these lines is early-maturing; hence none is suitable for spring sowing in West Asia and North Africa. The project has also identified line ILC 5901 which is resistant to leaf miner (Liriomyza cicerina) out of over 5500 germplasm accessions evaluated (Weigand and Tahhan 1990). However, this line is very late-maturing. Induced mutation has been used to develop new genetic variability and, occasionally, new chickpea cultivars (Haq et al, 1984). Mutagenic studies were initiated in 1991/92 to develop early lines with resistance to ascochyta blight or leaf miner.
