摘要

Aluminium alloys have extensive application in industries. The range of physical properties that can be imparted to them is remarkable. Marriage of Silicon to Aluminium promises to increase their high strength to weight ratio, high wear resistance, low density and low coefficient of thermal expansion. Al-Si is an important alloy for many commercial automotive applications (pistons, cylinder liners, etc.) duo to its unique properties. Thus it becomes all the more vital to study the tribological characteristics of Aluminium-Silicon alloys. In the present work, an attempt has been made to investigate the wear properties of four Aluminium-Silicon cast alloy samples i.e. Al-8wt%Si, Al-12wt%Si and Al-15wt% Si and Al-19wt%Si under dry sliding-condition. Wear tests were conducted using a pin on-disc type wear testing machine (DUCOM wear and friction monitor) followed by density measurement, hardness measurement, tensile test and composition analysis. The operational parameters for wear test that were varied are Silicon content of the alloy, normal load, sliding velocity, sliding distance. Wear characteristics are observed with respect to sliding speed and bearing load. & it is noticed that the height loss due to wear decreases when the percentage of silicon increases. Keeping in view the need of industry, a comparison analysis of the tests has been made with respect to the different Silicon percentage in different Aluminium-Silicon alloys.
