摘要

Today the variety of materials is available with each material having its own characteristics, applications, advantages, and limitations. In choosing the right material, there is not always a single definite attribute of selection and the designers and engineers have to take into account a large number of material selection attributes. The ability to select the most appropriate material for a given application is the fundamental challenges faced by the design engineer. A systematic and efficient approach to material selection approach is necessary in order to select the best alternative for a given application.A multi-criteria analysis is a popular tool to select best alternative for given applications. A new method presented in this paper (IPV method) has a different perspective. The procedure is based on an Inner Product of Vectors method considering the material selection attributes and their relative importance for the application considered.
