News from Alaska:Terry D. Debruyn New Leader of Polar Bear Program

While Scott Schliebe will bemissed, his position was filled inDecember 2008 by Terry DeBruyn– no stranger to Alaska or the IBA.Terry will also replace Scott as oneof the US representative to the PolarBear Specialist Group. Terry received a M.S. Degree inbiology from Northern MichiganUniversity and his Ph.D. studyingblack bears in a decade-long studyin Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Heworked with bears for the past 19years. After his Ph.D. studies, heworked with black bears as the SectionLeader, Bear Research and Manage-ment, for the Florida ConservationCommission, with brown bears asthe bear biologist at Katmai NationalPark and Preserve, and with bothblack and brown bears as the AlaskaRegional Wildlife Biologist for theNational Park Service Alaska Regionoffice. Terry collaborated on polarbear research involving the oil and gasindustry on the North Slope of Alaskawith USGS-BRD.
