TRACK THE BADGER TO HIS DEN

Badgers are extremely visible in our culture - the symbol of the Wildlife Trusts, ubiquitous in children's books and even appearing on Tesco's coat of arms - and yet they are surprisingly elusive in our countryside.I'm an enthusiastic amateur naturalist but, growing up in Norfolk in the 1980s, I never saw a real live badger in the wild. I still hadn't seen one in my 30s, which was particularly embarrassing as my grandma, Jane Ratcliffe, had been a superb badger-watcher and campaigned for the Badgers Act, a ground-breaking piece of legislation which made the badger the first British land mammal to gain specific protection in law.
