Use of daptomycin as salvage therapy in the treatment of central nervous system infections including meningitis and shunt infections

We present 4 cases of central nervous system infections, including 3 shunt infections, caused by gram-positive pathogens treated successfully with a combination of daptomycin and rifampin. In this set of patients, the meningitis resolved using daptomycin and rifampin therapy following removal of the ventricular shunt if present. In 2 patients with obtained daptomycin concentrations, the cerebral spinal fluid concentrations ranged from 7.0% to 29.7% of the serum.
