CHINA GENGSHENG MINERALS Inc., a refractories manufacturer based in Gongyi, Henan, east China, has been expanding recently, with the acquisition of Xinyu Abrasives Co. Ltd (a brown fused alumina producer) and announcements of bauxite proppant and silicon carbide contracts (see IM August '08, p. 10 and IM September '08, p.14). But its core business is monolithic and shaped refractories, where it holds a 1.2 percent share of an expanding 4,000 million dollars. Chinese market. Shunqing Zhang, chief executive officer, president and chairman of Gengsheng, told IM: "We expect to see the refractories market in China to grow 10 percent to 43m. tonnes this year. Gengsheng produced 140,000 tpa [refractories] in 2007 and expects to produce 200,000 tpa in 2008."
