Exploitation of Morocco's diverse and widespread mineral resources made a 2.77% contribution to national GDP in 2001, not including conversions of concentrates to derivatives, and accounted for 19.5% of exports by value. With one ministry responsible for energy and mines, Morocco's government has a unique appreciation of the psychologically significant balance between energy mineral imports and mineral sector exports.
