One of the main areas of concern with storing nuclear waste is the potential contamination of water used for human consumption, and, so, a protective barrier is needed to stop the leak of radioactive materials. One mineral that has the appropriate qualities is bentonite, which is already used as a packing material around nuclear waste canisters, and has three important functions.
