In opening the 6th Chinese Industrial Minerals Conference-CIMC6 in Shanghai on 1 9 September, Chen Haoran, Chairman of China Chamber of Commerce Metals, Minerals, and Chemicals Importers and Exporters (CCCMC) spoke of reduction being "an inevitable trend in China's minerals exports." Chen said: "To sustain economic development is our correct choice made on the basis of our reflection on the experience of economic growth and development to alleviate pressing conflicts among population, resources and environment. We must step up to build a saving society with the principle of being 'reduction, recycle, and resource-minded'". This is certainly one aspect of the Chinese market which has been keenly monitored in recent years, since so many important industrial minerals (eg. magnesite, bauxite, fused alumina, graphite, talc, barytes) have been sourced from China over the last 20 years or so. Shortages in supply for certain exports have already impacted western markets.
