THE POPULATION of domestic cats in Europe is about 50m. Expert ethologists and vets stare that the main functions of hygienic litter are to cater adequately for the cat's eliminative behaviour and prevent illnesses and bad smells from its excrement. As to the first function, the cat must fully accept the litter for this use. Cats originated in semi-arid zones where the ground mainly consisted of sand and adapted to conditions that allowed excrement to be buried for territorial reasons. Cat litter must also be hygienic, so the material it is comprised of must be inert, able to control organic waste, avoid smells, and neutralise possible bacterial contamination.
