UK aggregate levy published

The EU Commission has published I its decision to approve the UK aggregate levy, which came into effect in April 2002. The published decision is no different from the draft version of 24 April (see IM May '02, p.71) with the Commission raising no objections.The levy has been fiercely criticised by the British Aggregates Association (BAA), which failed in its high Court bid to stop its introduction (see IM June '02, p.15). The BAA claims that failure by the Commission to publish a decision for 10 weeks has prevented it being discussed, analysed or criticised by the quarry industry. The BAA also highlights that the industry was not informed about the Commission's investigation into the wider aspects of the levy.
