Samrec vermiculite doubles capacity

Samrec Vermiculite (Zimbabwe) (Pvt) Ltd, the Imerys owned operator of the Shawa mine in Zimbabwe, is close to completing a project to more than double its vermiculite capacity to 40,000 tpa. As well as the capacity increase, the development includes various additional bagging and storage facilities at the site.The mine has had a capacity of about 1 8,000 tpa for the past three years. The decision to develop the mine was taken in late 2000 as a result of high demand for "big" flakes, of which Samrec is one of only a few producers world-wide. The company has also modified the production process, significantly expanding the reserve base and increasing the remaining life of the mine from 9 to as much as 31 years.
