In Iran, the main source for production of magnesia is natural magnesite ore, derived almost exclusively from deposits around Birjand in South Khorasan province, in the east of the country. Approximately all magnesia production of the area is controlled by Iranian Refractories Procurement & Production Co. (IRPPCO). Although there are several occurrences and small deposits of natural magnesite in different parts of Iran, the most important ones occur in a discontinuous belt of mafic-ultramafic rocks, a part of the flysch and ophiolite melange zone in eastern Iran, especially in the South Khorasan province (Figure 1).
