Importers suffer TiO_2 duty

The Malaysian government has placed a 15 percent duty on imports of TiO_2 pigment into the country. An announcement issued by the Malaysian Ministry of Finance at the beginning of December last year, stated that the custom duties on two categories of TiO_2 pigment would be amended as from 22 December: a 15 percent duty has been effected on rutile grade titanium dioxide, and compounds containing it, whilst the duty on anatase grade material has been increased from 2 percent to 15 percent. In spite of the announcement, the country's importers claim to have been taken by surprise by the initiative and were only made aware, and were only made aware of the change when shipments of pigment arrived from ISK and DuPont at the end of December, and the importers were asked to pay the duty.
