On February 20, 2009, during the India International Tea Convention 2009 held at Kochi, a paper on the retail tea trade in India was presented in detail. The exhaustive exposition touched on today's retail, the changing face of retail, retail businessand consumer trends and what it could mean for tea, and ways to connect with the consumer. Today's retail in India is conducted through 12 million outlets and is estimated to grow from 350 billion dollar to 450 billion dollar by 2015. Share of retail business has increased from 5% originally to 15 to 18% at present inspite of high costs due to high rentals, supply chain continuty, manpower issues and expertise. Retail tea business has to fight slowdown, declining footfalls and lower sales from the same store.
