LEATHER INDUSTRY IN EASTERN REGION OF INDIA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO LEATHER GOODS INDUSTRY

The growth of leather industry depends mainly on the availability of raw materials, cheaper labour, technology and supportive government policies. The Indian leather industry has a distinct advantage of abundant availability of raw materials (hides and skins) with the largest livestock population in the world (20% of world cattle & buffalo and 17% of world goat & 7% sheep population. More more potential in industry provides the sector significant opportunities for expansion, modernization and diversification. The exports from the Indian leather sector earn US$ 4997 million in 2012-13 (2012 April-March 2013). The whole leather industry (includes leather goods, leather garments, footwear) provides direct employment to more than 2.5 million people from socially and economically bacKward and minority communities.
