A field experiment was conducted in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, India, during wet seasons of 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 to evaluate the efficacy of new insecticides in reducing the population of white fly (Bemisia tabaci) and Yellow vein mosaic virus disease of mesta (Hibiscus cannabinus). The insecticidal treatments comprised T1=thiamethoxam 25 WG at 100 g/ha, T2=imidacloprid 17.8 SL at 125 ml/ha, T3=monocrotophos 36 SL at 800 ml/ha, T4=acetamiprid 20 SP at 100 ml/ha, T5=carbosulfan 25 EC at 600 ml/ha, T6=neem [Azadirachta indica] oil at 2.5 l/ha, and T7=control. All the insecticides were significantly effective in reducing yellow vein mosaic disease incidence, white fly population and in increasing fibre yield compared with the unsprayed control. The lowest (22.14%) mean disease incidence at 90 days after spraying was recorded in T4, followed by T2 (23.52%) and T1 (27.22%). The highest reduction in mean white fly population was recorded in T4 (74.96%), followed by T2 (68.44%) and T1 (65.50%). The highest average fibre yield (24.18 q/ha) was recorded in T4, followed by T2 (23.52 q/ha). The highest net profit of Rs 16 094/ha was also obtained from T4, followed by T2 (Rs 15 369/ha).
