Vauxhall, after a bit of lobbying from Autocar, decided to bring the Monaro to the UK from 2004. Sat among its contemporary Corsas, Astras and Vectras inside a Vauxhall showroom, it made for quite a sight, the Aussie brute a rather incongruous addition to Vauxhall's line-up. A large four-seat coupe with genuinely usable rear seats, the Monaro had a 5.7-litre V8 engine up front powering the wheels at the back via a six-speed manual gearbox. The specification could have been written with our road test team in mind. It didn't disappoint, either. The likeable big coupe impressed with its performance and handling, as well as its pricing and day-to-day usability.
