Last year we bought a Peugeot 309 GTi and gave it a track-day makeover on the cheap. Now we've really let rip, and the pug's ready to do the same. The pinnacle has been scaled. A 12-month tax disc now has pride of place on our venerable 1989 F-plate Peugeot 309's windscreen. It is proof that Autocar's former £250 scrapper has completed its metamorphosis into a an exceedingly healthy and effective, and road registered, track-day special. It now stands ready for the opening of next month's driving season. Inside and out our Peugeot now has a new coat of luminous yellow-green paint, and under the bonnet, the trusty 1.9 litre XU engine has been rebuilt and tweaked to yield about 155bhp, with an ultra-sporty exhaust note to go with it.
