This is the car that inspired one of the most evocative car brochures there's ever been - and it's also a car with an almost unrivalled capacity for frightening those who worry about cars going wrong. Even today, 38 years after this beautiful wheeled sculpture first appeared, the Citroen SM has a reputation for being one of the most technically dense and mechanically challenging cars ever. It's not hard to see why. Not only does it float upon Citroen's devilishly plumbed hydropneumatic suspension, but it's also propelled by a V6 Maserati engine with an unfortunate habit of mashing up its internals in much the same way as an electric juicer slashes through tropical fruit.
