摘要

On the 50th anniversary of Britain's first motorway, Hilton Holloway wonders if we will ever see another major revamp of the country's multi-lane network. This Friday, 5 December, marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Britain's first motorway. The Preston Bypass was a modest affair, a two-lane road just 8.26 miles long and 112 ft wide that ran from Walton-Le-Dale in the south to Broughton in the north. But it was the beginning of a road-travel revolution that, like the canals and railways before it, transformed the economy and the way we all live and work.
