When Lexus first started work on the original LS400, way back in 1985, no one had any idea how successful the project would be. It may have taken another four years and ￡1bn to develop, but at the time the idea of a Japanese luxury car good enough to rival Mercedes and BMW seemed about as feasible as putting a man on the sun. But the LS400 happened and, when it did, it tore the rulebook on luxury cars into so many pieces that Mercedes & Co had to go back to the drawing board to compete. The LS was so highly regarded by its established opposition that, just three years later, Mercedes produced what is still regarded as one of its finest cars ever: the spookily excellent W140 S-class. And the rest, as they say, is history.
