The sky was as grey as a corrugated iron roof, but Dario Benuzzi's trademark sunglasses were, as usual, shielding his eyes. This was 1989, and Ferrari's legendary development driver was about to demonstrate the new 348 for a what's-it-like-from-the-passenger-seat feature a month before the big launch drive. The venue was Ferrari's Fiorano test track. We buckled up and Benuzzi ripped out of the pits like they were on fire, the aluminium gearlever clack-banging into third as we got to the end of the straight and the first long, tightish right-hander. He confidently took a chunk of lock, the Ferrari's nose turning instantly as a smidgen of roll made the horizon tilt and the 348's V8-weighted tail followed.
