THE PONY CAR that shook up the 2006 Detroit motor show almost didn't make it out of General Motors' styling studio. After cancelling the original, ill-conceived show vehicle, product chief Bob Lutz ordered a top-secret shootout between some of GM's top designers. The response was overwhelming, and despite its increasing cash problems the car maker decided to put the Camaro back into production after a decade-long absence.
